Mission
LIFE recognizes the importance of education especially as it pertains to our youth. A core area of LIFE’s programs is the Youth Investment Program (YIC). The mission of the YIC is to increase students’ knowledge of financial matters so they can become better stewards, responsible savers, investors, and consumers. Students will learn how taking control of their finances can assist them in developing healthy and realistic behaviors and attitudes towards money and finances.
Goals and Objectives
- Students improve their financial acumen while learning to identify and prioritize their personal money management goals.
- Students understand the tradeoffs between personal consumption and delayed gratification.
- Students become better stewards and contribute to society by taking responsibility for themselves and their financial future.
- Students are trained in financial management and leadership development.
Focus Areas The focus areas of the youth investment program may include:
- Fundamental of Money Management: banking; savings; budgeting; time value of money; compound interest; credit and debt management.
- Introduction to investments: stocks and bonds; asset allocation; diversification; how to read the Wall Street Journal/financial pages.
- Investment management: stock research; portfolio evaluation and review, company analyses and evaluation, corporate ethics.
- Portfolio reviews and stock portfolio contest.
- College Funding/Careers
Youth Population Target
- Ages 12-18; Group size of 25-30 (maximum participation); Washington Metropolitan area youth
Spring 2011 Youth Investment Club Sessions
The one-day, five hour program will expose youth to a variety of financial topics. The target age for this workshop series is age 12 (minimum) to 18 years of age. Objectives will be accomplished with a variety of lecture, discussion, and interactive individual and group assignments. The session will include an opportunity for the students to make presentations on the company that they select for study and analysis during the program.
The Spring 2011 Youth Investment Club program will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 9:30 am to 3pm, Reid Temple AME-North Campus, 12101 Tech Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904
All parents / students must complete the YIC application to be enrolled in the series (click here for an application). The series is limited to the first 30 students to enroll.
